Flaming Gorge Elementary School is located in Dutch John, Utah, about six miles south of the Wyoming border and about 20 miles west of the Colorado state line. The school has just 18students in grades K-4. Middle and high school students are bussed to Manila. Dutch John is a "government town;" it was built in the late 1950s to as a housing area for workers building Flaming Gorge Dam and reservoir. It is entirely surrounded by the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area. It is now home to federal, state, and local government employees and many others; Dutch John was privatized in 1998, which allowed private ownership of homes and property. Information on purchasing lots can be found on the Daggett County Website. In 2002, the Mustang Ridge fire burned 20,000 acres in the area.

Dutch John is on the "Outlaw Trail," an area favored by such luminaries as Robert LeRoy Parker and Harry Longabaugh (aka Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid).
